The ParakanÃ

Guardians of the Forest

Building a Future, Protecting a Forest

The Parakanã people have lived in the Amazon for generations, protecting the forest against deforestation from ranchers, loggers, and miners. Facing poverty and loss of income, they are vulnerable to offers from industrial agriculture, which fuels further destruction.

Together with our partner Apsis Carbon, we have developed a methodology that empowers indigenous people to define what is good for them, creating the conditions for them to decide how they want to build their future. The project ensures benefit-sharing with the Parakanã community through formal agreements and governance structures, while providing training, business guidance, and tools for sustainable development.

Guardians of Tomorrow

This support includes firefighting skills, satellite forest monitoring, and agroforestry models that generate income through products like açaí and Brazil nuts, while ensuring access to clean water, power, and education. A high percentage of carbon credit revenues flows directly to the Parakanã, guaranteeing economic benefit and community empowerment. Using Verra’s VM0048 methodology, robust and conservative monitoring guarantees permanence and low indirect emissions.

Despite cultural differences, the project prioritizes biodiversity, long-term carbon storage, and community-led governance. By aligning indigenous knowledge with modern tools, the Parakanã are building a sustainable future for their people and protecting the Amazon for generations to come.

Our monitoring

We are using the most robust and conservative carbon calculations to ensure permanence and low indirect emissions. Our monitoring tool was developed following Verra’s VM 0048 methodology.

We see carbon credits as a crucial tool for incentivizing emissions reduction and supporting sustainable initiatives.
